16mm Film Screening — Rosa von Praunheim`s “A Virus Knows No Morals”

This underground farce by a filmmaker of the New German Cinema is a black comedy concerning everyone’s worst fears about AIDS. Created during the 1980s, the film is irreverent yet serious, covering various aspects of the AIDS epidemic, including misconceptions, effects, and political ramifications. Among the characters who appear in this contemporary cautionary tale is a student of religious music, the owner of a gay sauna who is his lover, a woman scientist overtaxed by the AIDS problem, a tabloid reporter, a psychotherapist who believes that the disease is psychosomatic, and a male nurse who is also a revolutionary working to force victims and the state to confront AIDS.

In the early Sixties, my anger was directed against my anxious gay friends. They easily gave in, didn’t fight back, and lived very hidden lives full of fear. I had nobody to talk to about gay politics and gay art. [...] In the early years of the AIDS crisis, I was very angry that most gays seemed so ignorant, especially the left-wings gays who didn’t believe in safer sex. It seemed more important to them to defend sexual freedom.

— Rosa von Praunheim in an interview with Ger Zielinski, Cineaste
