Monday Night Movies “Daisy Miller” (1974)
“Daisy Miller”, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, is an adaptation of Henry James’ classic novella about a young, free-spirited American woman traveling through Europe in the late 19th century. Cybill Shepherd stars as Daisy Miller, whose bold and unconventional behavior — flirting openly, disregarding social norms, and spending time unchaperoned with men — shocks the rigid high society of Switzerland and Rome.
Frederick Winterbourne (Barry Brown), a reserved American expatriate, is both fascinated and disturbed by Daisy’s defiance of propriety. Though drawn to her charm, he hesitates to fully embrace her, torn between admiration and the judgmental whispers of elite circles, particularly from the disapproving Mrs. Walker (Cloris Leachman). As Daisy’s reputation suffers, Winterbourne struggles to reconcile his feelings before tragedy strikes, forcing him to confront the cost of societal prejudice and his passivity.
