Thursday Afternoon Films “The Yakuza” (1974)

Directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Mitchum and Ken Takakura, “The Yakuza” is a gritty crime thriller that blends American noir with Japanese yakuza drama. Retired detective Harry Kilmer (Mitchum) returns to Japan to rescue his friend’s kidnapped daughter, forcing him to confront his past — including a wartime romance with a Japanese woman and a debt owed to her brother, Tanaka (Takakura), a disciplined yakuza enforcer. As Kilmer navigates Tokyo’s criminal underworld, he must reconcile honor, loyalty, and vengeance in a world where ancient codes clash with modern violence. The film explores cultural conflict, redemption, and the brutal cost of obligation, culminating in a violent and emotionally charged finale.
