Thursday Afternoon Films “Funeral in Berlin” (1966)

“Funeral in Berlin” (1966), directed by Guy Hamilton, is a Cold War spy thriller based on Len Deighton’s novel of the same name. The film stars Michael Caine as Harry Palmer, a British intelligence agent tasked with facilitating the defection of a high-ranking Soviet officer, Colonel Stok (played by Oscar Homolka), in East Berlin.

As Palmer navigates the shadowy world of espionage, he becomes entangled in a web of double-crosses, deception, and political intrigue. The operation takes him to divided Berlin, where he must outwit both Soviet and Western intelligence agencies while uncovering a complex plot involving a fake funeral as a cover for the defection. With its tense atmosphere, sharp wit, and intricate plot, “Funeral in Berlin” is a gripping tale of loyalty, betrayal, and the murky morality of Cold War espionage.
