YA Movie Day “Inside Out” (2015)
The film takes place primarily inside the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old girl, where five personified emotions — Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust — control her actions and reactions from their headquarters in her brain. Joy, the enthusiastic leader, strives to keep Riley happy, but when Riley’s family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, the move throws her emotional world into chaos.
As Riley struggles to adapt to her new life, Sadness starts to interfere with Joy’s attempts to keep Riley cheerful. When a memory containing both joy and sadness gets sucked out of Headquarters, Joy and Sadness are accidentally pulled out as well, leaving Fear, Anger, and Disgust in control. This causes Riley’s personality to shift, and she becomes withdrawn and distant.
Joy and Sadness embark on a journey through Riley’s mind to return to Headquarters, navigating the complex landscape of her subconscious, imagination, and long-term memory. Along their journey, they discover that all of Riley’s emotions, including Sadness, are vital to her emotional well-being and development. They must learn to accept and integrate all of Riley’s feelings to restore her happiness and help her adjust to her new life.
“Inside Out” explores the complex world of human emotions creatively and innovatively, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and embracing sadness, not just seeking happiness. The film emphasizes that emotional growth requires experiencing a full spectrum of feelings and that all emotions play a crucial role in shaping who we are.
