Set in the gritty streets of Harlem, Above the Rim is a coming-of-age sports drama that follows the life of Kyle Lee Watson (Duane Martin), a talented high school basketball player with dreams of earning a college scholarship. Kyle faces pressure from his overprotective mother, Mailika (Tonya Pinkins), who wants him to focus on academics, and his older brother, Shep (Leon), a former basketball star whose life took a tragic turn.

Kyle’s path crosses with Birdie (Tupac Shakur), a local drug dealer who runs a streetball team and takes an interest in Kyle’s skills.
