Movie Monday — Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” (2012)
The Lorax (2012) is an animated musical fantasy film based on Dr. Seuss’s classic children’s book of the same name. The story follows Ted Wiggins, a curious and idealistic 12-year-old boy who lives in Thneedville, a walled city completely devoid of nature, where everything is artificial, including trees. Ted has a crush on his neighbor, Audrey, who dreams of seeing a real tree, something Ted has never encountered.
To win Audrey’s heart, Ted embarks on a quest to find a real tree. His journey leads him outside the city walls to the barren wasteland, where he meets the reclusive Once-ler. The Once-ler recounts the story of how the land became desolate: years ago, he discovered the Truffula Trees and, driven by greed, harvested them to create Thneeds, a versatile product. Despite warnings from the Lorax, a small, mustachioed guardian of the forest who “speaks for the trees,” the Once-ler continued his destructive practices, leading to the depletion of the Truffula Trees and the exile of the forest animals.
The Once-ler gives Ted the last Truffula seed, urging him to plant it and restore the trees. However, Ted faces opposition from Mr. O’Hare, the greedy mayor of Thneedville who profits from selling bottled air and fears the return of trees. With the help of Audrey, his family, and the townspeople, Ted plants the seed, sparking hope for a greener future.
The film is a colorful and whimsical tale that emphasizes environmental conservation, the consequences of greed, and the power of individual action to make a difference. It features catchy songs, vibrant animation, and a heartfelt message about protecting nature.
