Thursday Afternoon Films: “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” (2008)

“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” (2008) is a charming romantic comedy set in 1930s London. The film follows Guinevere Pettigrew, a dowdy, middle-aged governess who is down on her luck and desperate for work. After being fired from her job, she impulsively steals an assignment as a social secretary for the glamorous and flighty American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse.

Delysia is a whirlwind of chaos, juggling three lovers: the wealthy but dull Phil, the passionate pianist Michael, and the powerful nightclub owner Nick. Miss Pettigrew, with her no-nonsense attitude and quick thinking, steps in to help Delysia navigate her complicated love life and career aspirations. Over a single day, the two women form an unlikely friendship, with Miss Pettigrew experiencing a taste of the high life and Delysia gaining a newfound sense of responsibility and self-awareness.

As the day unfolds, Miss Pettigrew also finds herself drawn to Joe, a kind-hearted fashion designer, while Delysia must make difficult choices about her future. The film is a delightful blend of humor, romance, and self-discovery, capturing the transformative power of friendship and the importance of staying true to oneself. With its sparkling wit, vibrant period setting, and stellar performances by Frances McDormand as Miss Pettigrew and Amy Adams as Delysia, “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” is a heartwarming tale of second chances and the magic of living in the moment.
