Thursday Night Movies “Coma” (1978)
Directed by Michael Crichton, “Coma” is a gripping medical thriller based on Robin Cook’s novel of the same name. The film follows Dr. Susan Wheeler (played by Geneviève Bujold), a young and determined surgical resident at Boston Memorial Hospital. When her close friend and fellow patient, Nancy Greenly, undergoes a routine procedure and inexplicably slips into a coma, Susan becomes suspicious.
As Susan investigates further, she discovers a disturbing pattern: several otherwise healthy patients have entered comas during minor surgeries at the hospital. Her inquiries lead her to the Jefferson Institute, a state-of-the-art facility where comatose patients are mysteriously transferred and stored. With the help of her boyfriend, Dr. Mark Bellows (Michael Douglas), Susan uncovers a chilling conspiracy involving organ harvesting and unethical medical practices.
As she digs deeper, Susan faces increasing resistance from hospital staff and administrators, including the enigmatic Dr. George Harris (Richard Widmark), who seems determined to stop her. Risking her career and life, Susan races to expose the truth before more patients fall victim to the sinister scheme.
“Coma” is a suspenseful and thought-provoking film that explores themes of medical ethics, corporate greed, and patients’ vulnerability within the healthcare system. Its tense atmosphere and shocking revelations keep viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
