Thursday Afternoon Films “The Usual Suspects” (1995)

“The Usual Suspects (1995), directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie, is a gripping crime thriller that revolves around deception, mystery, and the elusive nature of truth. The story begins with a devastating explosion on a ship in San Pedro Harbor, leaving only two survivors: a severely burned Hungarian mobster and Roger “Verbal” Kint, a small-time con artist with cerebral palsy.

As the investigation unfolds, U.S. Customs Agent Dave Kujan brings Verbal in for questioning. Through a series of flashbacks, Verbal recounts the events leading up to the explosion. He explains how he and four other criminals — Dean Keaton, Michael McManus, Fred Fenster, and Todd Hockney—were brought together in a police lineup and later formed a crew to pull off a series of heists. Their criminal activities eventually attract the attention of a mysterious and feared crime lord known as Keyser Söze, a mythical figure whose very existence is questioned.

As the crew is coerced into working for Söze, tensions rise, alliances fracture, and paranoia sets in. The film builds to a shocking climax where the true identity of Keyser Söze is revealed, leaving both the characters and the audience questioning everything they thought they knew. With its intricate plot, masterful twists, and unforgettable performances — particularly Kevin Spacey’s Oscar-winning turn as Verbal Kint — “The Usual Suspects” is a modern classic that keeps viewers guessing until the very end.
