NYPL Cinema Scene “The Lady Vanishes” (1938)

“The Lady Vanishes” follows Iris Henderson, a young, vacationing socialite, on a train journey through Europe. She befriends an elderly English governess, Miss Froy, but after a brief nap, Miss Froy disappears without a trace. When Iris questions the other passengers, they all claim Miss Froy never existed. Increasingly frustrated and determined, Iris, with the assistance of a charming musicologist named Gilbert Redman, embarks on a quest to find Miss Froy. Their investigation leads them down a path of intrigue and danger, revealing a web of espionage and a sinister plot involving the seemingly innocent passengers on the train. The film blends suspense, humor, and romance as the unlikely pair attempt to solve the mystery and expose the conspiracy.
