Monday Matinee “Being There” (1979)

“Being There” (1979) is a satirical and allegorical film that follows the story of Chance, a simple-minded gardener who lives a sheltered life, completely unaware of the world outside his confined environment.

After the death of his elderly employer, Chance is thrust into the outside world, finding himself accidentally involved in the lives of powerful and influential people. His naïve comments and observations, often misinterpreted by those around him, are taken as deep insights and political wisdom.

Chance’s unintentional influence grows, as he becomes an unlikely advisor to a powerful businessman and even catches the attention of the President of the United States. His simple yet profound statements about the seasons and gardening are interpreted by those around him as metaphors for the state of the nation and the world.

“Being There” is a satirical and often humorous film that explores themes of power, politics, media, and the search for meaning in a complex and often absurd world. The film uses Chance’s naiveté as a lens through which to examine the world of high politics and the ways in which simple truths can be misinterpreted and manipulated. The film’s ending leaves the audience to contemplate the true meaning of Chance’s influence and the nature of power in a world where appearances often outweigh substance.
