Saturday Afternoon Movie “The King of Staten Island” (2020)

“The King of Staten Island” is a 2020 semi-autobiographical comedy-drama film loosely based on the life of comedian Pete Davidson, who also co-wrote and stars in the movie.

The film follows Scott Carlin, a 24-year-old aspiring tattoo artist living in Staten Island, New York. Scott is struggling to cope with the death of his firefighter father, who died when he was seven, and he grapples with emotional immaturity, lack of direction, and a propensity for self-sabotage.

Scott’s life is disrupted when his mother starts dating a firefighter named Ray, triggering his unresolved grief and forcing him to confront his emotional baggage. He navigates strained family relationships, friendships, and romantic interests, all while trying to find his place in the world.

The film explores themes of grief, family dynamics, and the challenges of growing up. It offers a raw and honest portrayal of a young man struggling to find his purpose and come to terms with his past, while also finding humor and heart in the everyday moments of life. “The King of Staten Island” is a poignant and often funny coming-of-age story about finding your way in life, learning to cope with loss and the importance of human connection.
