National Film Registry Series: Louis Malle’s “Atlantic City” (1980)

“Atlantic City” (1980) is a romantic crime drama set against the backdrop of a changing Atlantic City. The film follows Lou, a small-time hustler and numbers runner, and Sally, a young, ambitious woman working as a cocktail waitress, as their lives intersect.

Lou, an aging man clinging to the remnants of a bygone era, is fascinated by Sally’s youth and dreams of a better life. Sally, eager to escape her mundane existence and pursue a career in the casino industry, becomes entangled with Lou after her ex-husband, Dave, shows up with stolen drugs.

When Dave is murdered, Lou finds himself in possession of the drugs and sees an opportunity to finally achieve the success he’s always craved. He uses the money from selling the drugs to help Sally pursue her dreams, while also trying to protect her from the dangers of the criminal underworld.

“Atlantic City” explores themes of love, loss, aging, and the pursuit of dreams in a city transforming. The film offers a poignant and melancholic portrayal of two individuals seeking connection and a chance at a better life, amidst the backdrop of a changing city and the allure of the casino world.
