Thursday Night Movies “The Night of the Iguana” (1964)

“The Night of the Iguana” is a darkly atmospheric drama set in a dilapidated hotel on the coast of Mexico. It follows the story of Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, a disgraced minister who has lost his faith and is struggling with alcoholism and a crisis of identity.

Shannon finds refuge at the hotel, run by the eccentric and ambitious Maxine Faulk. He’s attracted to her and to the bohemian atmosphere she cultivates, but he’s also drawn into a complex web of relationships with the hotel’s guests, each with their secrets and struggles.

Among the guests are Hannah Jelkes, a struggling artist, and her teenage granddaughter, who are seeking solace and inspiration. Shannon is drawn to Hannah’s strength and independence, but he is unable to escape the demons of his past and the temptation of alcohol.

The film explores themes of faith, sexuality, and the search for meaning and purpose. It explores the darkness and despair that can arise from loss and disillusionment, but also the possibility of redemption and hope. The characters are complex and flawed, struggling with their desires and vulnerabilities.

“The Night of the Iguana” is a compelling and haunting film that captures the raw and unsettling beauty of human nature. It explores the complexities of relationships, the search for meaning, and the fragility of hope in a world filled with uncertainty.
