Monday Night Movies “Spite Marriage” (1929)

“Spite Marriage” is a 1929 American pre-code comedy film about a young woman, Evelyn, who finds herself in a difficult situation after her fiancé, Donald, leaves her at the altar.

To save face and avoid social humiliation, Evelyn’s father, a wealthy industrialist, proposes a plan: they will stage a fake marriage with a man named Jack, a playboy who needs to escape an unwanted marriage.

The plan is to create the illusion of a happy couple for some time, but as Evelyn and Jack spend more time together, they begin to develop genuine feelings for each other. Their initial disdain for each other evolves into a begrudging respect, and eventually, love.

However, the charade takes a turn when Donald unexpectedly returns, now wealthy from a lucky investment, and wants Evelyn back. Evelyn, torn between her newfound love for Jack and her feelings for her former fiancé, must decide who she truly wants to be with.

“Spite Marriage” is a classic screwball comedy with witty dialogue, a fast-paced plot, and a happy ending. It explores the complexities of love and marriage, highlighting how love can blossom in the most unexpected places.
