Monday night movies: “Hairspray” (1988)

In 1962 Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad, a bubbly and overweight teenager, dreams of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show. Despite facing discrimination for her size and appearance, Tracy’s infectious energy and talent land her a spot on the show, making her an overnight sensation.

Tracy uses her newfound fame to advocate for racial integration on the show, challenging the status quo and the prejudices of the show’s producer, Velma Von Tussle. Velma, determined to maintain the show’s segregation and promote her daughter Amber to stardom, becomes Tracy’s biggest adversary.

As Tracy fights for equality on the dance floor, she also finds love with the charming Link Larkin, the show’s heartthrob. With the support of her best friend Penny Pingleton, her quirky parents Edna and Wilbur, and the soulful Seaweed J. Stubbs and his friends from the “wrong side of the tracks,” Tracy leads a movement for change and acceptance.

Hairspray is a vibrant and energetic musical comedy that tackles themes of racial prejudice, body positivity, and the power of individuality. With its infectious dance numbers, catchy music, and humor, the film celebrates diversity and delivers a message of hope and progress.
