Monday Matinee: “Sweet Smell of Success” (1957)

Sweet Smell of Success dives into the ruthless world of New York City gossip columns and the dark underbelly of power and manipulation.

Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis), a press agent hungry for success, desperately seeks to get his clients mentioned in the influential column of J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster), a powerful and feared columnist. Hunsecker, a man who thrives on controlling others, agrees to help Falco, but only if he carries out a malicious task: break up the relationship between his younger sister and a jazz musician he deems unworthy.

Falco, blinded by ambition and the allure of Hunsecker’s power, plunges into a web of deceit and betrayal. He manipulates and destroys lives, all while struggling to maintain his own sanity and morality. As his actions become increasingly desperate, the lines between right and wrong blur, leading to a climax filled with devastating consequences.

Themes of ambition, power, corruption, and the price of success are explored in this cynical and suspenseful film noir. The fast-paced dialogue, stark black and white cinematography, and iconic performances by Curtis and Lancaster make Sweet Smell of Success a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences.
