Hollywood and the Great Depression, 1929-39 Movie: “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” (1969)

They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? is a 1969 American drama film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin, Susannah York, Gig Young, Red Buttons, and Bruce Dern. It is based on the 1935 novel of the same name by Horace McCoy.

The film is set in a dance marathon during the Great Depression. The contestants, desperate for money and fame, dance for days on end, with only brief breaks for food and sleep. The marathon is a grueling and dehumanizing experience, and the contestants are pushed to their physical and emotional limits.

Gloria Beatty (Jane Fonda) is a cynical and disillusioned woman who enters the marathon with her partner, Robert Syverton (Michael Sarrazin). Gloria is determined to win, but she soon realizes that the marathon is more than just a dance contest. It is a metaphor for the struggle of life itself.

The film is a powerful and disturbing indictment of the American Dream. It shows how people can be exploited and dehumanized in the pursuit of wealth and fame. The film is also a meditation on the nature of hope and despair.

They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $12 million worldwide. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Jane Fonda. Gig Young won the award for Best Supporting Actor.

The film is considered to be one of the best films of the 1960s, and it continues to be relevant today. It is a powerful reminder of the human cost of greed and exploitation.
