Monday Matinee: “Field of Dreams” (1989)

Field of Dreams is a 1989 American sports fantasy drama film written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, based on W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 novel Shoeless Joe. It stars Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster.

The film tells the story of Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his cornfield. Despite the financial risk and ridicule from his neighbors, Ray follows his intuition and builds the field.

Soon, the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, begin to appear and play on the field. Ray’s journey to understand the meaning of the voice and the field leads him to reconnect with his deceased father and to help a reclusive writer find redemption.

Field of Dreams is a film about following your dreams, no matter how crazy they may seem. It is also a film about family, forgiveness, and the power of baseball to connect people across generations.

The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $84 million worldwide. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

Field of Dreams has become a beloved classic, and its iconic line, “If you build it, he will come,” has entered the American lexicon. The film continues to resonate with audiences of all ages, inspiring them to believe in their dreams and to never give up on their passions.
