Family Movies: “The Wiz” (1978)

“The Wiz” is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet and adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. The movie presents a reimagined version of L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 children’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” featuring an entirely African-American cast. The film stars Diana Ross as Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, who, along with her dog Toto, is whisked away to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a surreal version of New York City.

In this magical land, Dorothy encounters and befriends a Scarecrow, played by Michael Jackson in his feature film debut, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. Together, they embark on a journey to seek help from the mysterious Wiz, portrayed by Richard Pryor. The film’s narrative follows their adventures and the challenges they face, including the confrontation with Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the East.

Despite its initial critical and commercial failure, “The Wiz” has since become a cult classic, appreciated for its unique take on the Oz lore and its significance in representing African-American culture in cinema1. The film’s legacy was further cemented with the 2015 live television adaptation, “The Wiz Live!”
