Movies at Hudson Park: “The Holdovers” (2023)

“The Holdovers” is a 2023 American comedy-drama film that has garnered significant attention and acclaim. Directed by Alexander Payne and written by David Hemingson, the movie stars Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham, a strict classics teacher at a New England boarding school. The plot unfolds over the Christmas break of 1970, where Hunham is forced to supervise students who couldn’t go home. Among these students is Angus Tully, portrayed by Dominic Sessa, a trouble-making yet bright student whose actions constantly risk his expulsion.

The film also features Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Mary Lamb, the school’s cafeteria manager grieving the loss of her son. The dynamics between the cranky teacher, the grieving cook, and the rebellious student create a compelling narrative that explores themes of authority, rebellion, and the search for belonging.

“The Holdovers” premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival and was released in the United States by Focus Features. It has been praised for its performances, particularly that of Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who won the Best Supporting Actress award at both the Golden Globe Awards and the British Academy Film Awards. The film has also received five nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

With a mix of humor and drama, “The Holdovers” has touched audiences and critics alike, making it a standout film of the year.
