Thursday Afternoon Films: “Conflict” (1945)

I love the movie Conflict (1945), it’s a classic example of film noir, a genre of suspenseful and dark films that often feature cynical and corrupt characters, moral ambiguity, and urban settings. Conflict is directed by Curtis Bernhardt, a German filmmaker who was influenced by the Expressionistic style of his native country. It stars Humphrey Bogart as Richard Mason, a husband who murders his wife Kathryn (Alexis Smith) in the hope of marrying her younger sister Evelyn (Rose Hobart). The film is full of twists and turns, as Richard tries to cover up his crime and deal with his guilty conscience. It also features the iconic cameo appearance of the Maltese Falcon statue, a symbol of greed and betrayal in film noir.
