NYPL Cinema Scene Film Screening: “Bisbee ’17” (2018)

The Cinema Scene is a monthly meet-up of film enthusiasts. It’s much like a book club, but instead of discussing a book, we discuss a movie. Click HERE to learn more and register for March’s discussion of Bisbee ’17.

Bisbee ’17 is a 2018 American film directed by Robert Greene that combines documentary and Western elements to reflect on the events of the 1917 Bisbee Deportation, a violent and unjust episode in the history of Bisbee, Arizona, a small town near the Mexican border. The film is set in Bisbee both in 1917 and 2017, as the locals collaborate to stage recreations of their controversial past and confront their legacy. The film features local actors, archival footage, and interviews with contemporary residents, as well as historical research and reenactments. The film has received critical acclaim for its compelling exploration of more than just the event itself and its use of certain images and music. It has been praised as a “must-see” with “universal acclaim” on Metacritic.
