Monday Matinee: “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008)

“Slumdog Millionaire” is a British drama film released in 2008, directed by Danny Boyle and co-directed by Loveleen Tandan. It’s a loose adaptation of the novel “Q & A” by Indian author Vikas Swarup. The story revolves around Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old from the slums of Mumbai, who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”.

The film follows Jamal’s life through flashbacks that explain how he knows the answers to the show’s questions. Each question from the game show triggers a memory from Jamal’s past, revealing his journey from the slums to the game show hot seat. Accused of cheating due to his slum background and lack of formal education, Jamal recounts his life story to the police, proving his innocence and how his experiences provided him with the knowledge to answer the questions.

“Slumdog Millionaire” was celebrated for its plot, soundtrack, and performances, particularly that of Dev Patel as Jamal. It was a critical and commercial success, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others. However, the film also sparked controversy and received mixed reactions, especially in India, for its portrayal of poverty and other social issues.
