Lunar Year Film Series “Eat Drink Man Woman” (1994)

Eat Drink Man Woman is a 1994 comedy-drama film directed by Ang Lee, from a script co-written with James Schamus and Hui-Ling Wang. It stars Sihung Lung, Wang Yu-wen, Wu Chien-lien, and Yang Kuei-mei as members of the Chu family, who cope with their personal and professional issues through their shared love of food.

The film is set in Taipei, Taiwan, and follows the life of Chu, a semi-retired master chef and widower, who lives with his three grown daughters, each with their problems and aspirations. Jia-Jen, the eldest, is a chemistry teacher and a devout Christian, who is still recovering from a broken heart. Jia-Chien, the second, is a successful airline executive, who secretly dreams of becoming a chef like her father. Jia-Ning, the youngest, is a college student and a part-time fast-food worker, who falls in love with her best friend’s boyfriend. Every Sunday, Chu prepares a lavish and elaborate feast for his daughters, which serves as a ritual and a bonding moment for the family. However, as the daughters gradually find their paths and partners, the family dynamic changes, and the tradition is threatened.

Eat Drink Man Woman is a film that explores the themes of tradition, modernity, identity, and love, as well as the role of food in culture and communication. It is a film that is inspired by Lee’s own experiences as a child of immigrants in the United States, and by his admiration for Chinese cuisine. The film also showcases the stunning cinematography and art direction of Jong Lin and Hsiao-hsien Hou, who create a vivid and realistic depiction of Taipei and its culinary scene.

The film was a critical and commercial success, both in Taiwan and internationally. It won several awards, including the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Golden Horse Award for Best Feature Film, and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was later remade into an American version, Tortilla Soup (2001), and a Chinese version, Joyful Reunion (2012).

Eat Drink Man Woman is a film that you should watch if you are looking for a charming, humorous, and touching film that will make you hungry and happy. It is a film that celebrates the beauty and diversity of life, and the power of food to connect people.
