Film Screening “Turning Red” (2022)

Turning Red is a 2022 animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It is directed by Domee Shi, who won an Academy Award for her short film Bao (2018) and written by Shi, Julia Cho, and Sarah Streicher. The film features the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, and others.

The film is set in Toronto, Canada, in 2002, and follows the story of Mei Lee (Chiang), a 13-year-old girl who is torn between being her mother’s dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (Oh), is never far from her daughter — an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically always), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!

Turning Red is a film that explores the themes of identity, family, and culture, as well as the challenges and joys of growing up. It is a film that is inspired by Shi’s own experiences as a child of immigrants in Canada, and by her love for red pandas. The film also showcases the stunning animation and visual effects of Pixar, especially in creating the realistic and expressive characters of Mei and her red panda alter ego.

Turning Red is a film that you should watch if you are looking for a fun, heartwarming, and original animated film that will make you laugh, cry, and think. It is a film that celebrates the beauty and diversity of life, and the power of being yourself.
