16mm Film Screening “Killer of Sheep” by Charles Burnett
Stan is employed in a Los Angeles slaughterhouse. His grueling work, gutting and cleaning the carcasses of dead sheep, infects his entire life including his relationship with his wife, children, and friends. Developing insomnia, Stan is offered alternatives to his predicament, but none of them fits his moral framework. Two old friends who need a partner in crime approach him to help them kill a person; a woman who runs a liquor store wants him to live with her. Burnett’s dramatic film evokes the physical details and ambivalence of working-class life. The soundtrack is composed of a wide range of musical styles.
