16mm Film Screening “Killer of Sheep” by Charles Burnett

Stan is employed in a Los Angeles slaughterhouse. His grueling work, gutting and cleaning the carcasses of dead sheep, infects his entire life including his relationship with his wife, children, and friends. Developing insomnia, Stan is offered alternatives to his predicament, but none of them fits his moral framework. Two old friends who need a partner in crime approach him to help them kill a person; a woman who runs a liquor store wants him to live with her. Burnett’s dramatic film evokes the physical details and ambivalence of working-class life. The soundtrack is composed of a wide range of musical styles.

While no registration is required, you may email lillianweber@nypl.org if you wish to receive a reminder a day before/day of the screening, as well as notifications about possible postponements or cancellations.

This screening will take place in person at the Seward Park branch.
