National Film Registry Series: Albert Magnoli’s ’Purple Rain’ (1984)

A young man with a musical talent has begun a career with much promise. He meets an aspiring singer, Apollonia, and finds that talent alone isn’t all that he needs. A complicated tale of his repeating his father’s self-destructive behavior, losing Apollonia to another singer, and coming to grips with his connection to other people ensues. (111 minutes)

Though Prince is somewhat less androgynous than Michael Jackson is, everything about him and the movie suggests cross-overs between opposites, or, at least, compromises between different modes of expression.

— Vincent Canby, New York Times

The National Film Preservation Board serves as an advisory group to the Librarian of Congress to ensure the survival, conservation, and increased public availability of America’s film heritage. In celebration of this heritage, this series screens one work from the National Film Registry Listing every month to ensure such films remain in the public eye.
