Monday Night Movies “Desert Fury” (1947)

The movie is set in a small Nevada town, where Fritzi Haller, a powerful casino owner, tries to prevent her daughter Paula from falling in love with Eddie Bendix, a racketeer who was once suspected of killing his wife. Paula, however, is drawn to Eddie’s mysterious and dangerous charm, despite the warnings of Tom Hanson, a deputy sheriff who loves her, and Johnny Ryan, Eddie’s loyal henchman who has a hidden crush on him. Eddie’s past comes back to haunt him when he learns that he is the only one who can stop Hades, a crime boss who plans to take over the town and the casino. Eddie must choose between his love for Paula and his loyalty to Johnny, while Paula must decide between her freedom and her mother’s wishes.

The movie is notable for its use of Technicolor, its melodramatic plot, and its subtext of homosexuality, especially in the relationship between Eddie and Johnny. The movie was based on a novel by Ramona Stewart, and adapted by Robert Rossen and A. I. Bezzerides. The movie was produced by Hal Wallis, with music by Miklós Rózsa and cinematography by Edward Cronjager and Charles Lang.
