Movie Monday “Hercules” (1997)

Hercules is the son of Zeus and Hera, the king and queen of the gods. He is born with superhuman strength and is destined to become a great hero. However, Hades, the god of the underworld, wants to overthrow Zeus and take over Olympus. He sends his minions, Pain, and Panic, to kidnap Hercules and turn him into a mortal. They succeed in making him lose his immortality, but not his strength. Hercules is adopted by a human couple and grows up unaware of his true origins.

When he becomes a young man, he learns from Zeus that he is his son and that he can regain his godhood if he proves himself a true hero. He meets Philoctetes, a satyr who trains heroes, and Pegasus, a flying horse. Together, they go on a quest to find and defeat monsters and villains. Along the way, he falls in love with Megara, a beautiful woman who works for Hades. He also makes friends with the people of Thebes, who admire his heroic deeds.

Hades, meanwhile, learns from the Fates that Hercules is the only one who can stop his plan to unleash the Titans, the ancient enemies of the gods, and take over Olympus. He tries to kill Hercules several times but fails. He then tricks Megara into betraying Hercules and making him give up his strength for her safety. He captures Megara and unleashes the Titans, who storm Olympus and overpower the gods.

Hercules, realizing that he was tricked, regains his strength and courage. He frees the gods and defeats the Titans, but not before Hades kills Megara. Hercules follows Hades to the underworld and rescues Megara’s soul, sacrificing his own life in the process. This act of selflessness proves him a true hero and restores his immortality. He decides to stay on Earth with Megara, rather than join his father on Olympus. Zeus and the other gods celebrate his choice and welcome him as a hero.
