Monday Matinee: “Paths of Glory” (1957)

Paths of Glory is a classic anti-war film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas. It is based on a novel by Humphrey Cobb, which was inspired by a true story of French soldiers who were executed for refusing to take part in a suicidal attack during World War I. The film depicts the brutality and injustice of war, as well as the courage and dignity of the men who fought it. The film is widely regarded as one of Kubrick’s best works and one of the greatest war films ever made. It was nominated for a BAFTA Award and won several other awards and critical acclaim. It was also banned or censored in several countries for its anti-military message. The film is known for its powerful performances, realistic battle scenes, and poignant ending, in which a German singer (played by Kubrick’s future wife Christiane) moves the French soldiers to tears with a song. Paths of Glory is a film that challenges the viewer to question the meaning and morality of war and to empathize with the human beings who suffer from it.
