Reel to Read Movies: “Cool Runnings” (1993)
Cool Runnings is a comedy film released in 1993, directed by Jon Turteltaub and starring John Candy, Leon Robinson, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis, and Malik Yoba. It is loosely based on the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team that competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada12.
The film follows the journey of four Jamaican sprinters who fail to qualify for the Summer Olympics and decide to form a bobsled team with the help of a disgraced former Olympic champion, Irving Blitzer (Candy). They face many challenges and obstacles, such as lack of funding, equipment, experience, and respect from other teams, but they also discover the spirit of friendship, teamwork, and pride.
