Reel to Read Movies: “Spaceballs” (1987)

Spaceballs (1987) is a comedy film that parodies the Star Wars trilogy and other sci-fi franchises. It was co-written, produced, and directed by Mel Brooks, who also plays two roles in the film.

The film follows the adventures of Lone Starr, a mercenary who must rescue Princess Vespa from the evil Spaceballs, who want to steal the air from her planet. Along the way, he learns about the power of the Schwartz, a mysterious force that can help him defeat the Spaceballs. The film features many jokes, references, and spoofs of popular culture, such as Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes, and The Wizard of Oz.

The film stars Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, and Joan Rivers. The film was released by MGM on June 24, 1987, and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, it has since become a cult classic and one of Brooks’s most popular films.
