Tuesday Movie Matinée: “Scrooged”

Scrooged is a 1988 comedy film that is a modern adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The film stars Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish TV executive who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve who show him the error of his ways and the true meaning of Christmas. The film also features Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, and Alfre Woodard.

The film follows Frank as he oversees the production of a live broadcast of A Christmas Carol, which he wants to make as sensational and violent as possible. He also treats his employees and family with contempt and indifference, firing one of his workers, Eliot, for disagreeing with him, and sending cheap gifts to most of the people on his Christmas list. He is estranged from his former girlfriend, Claire, who left him because he was obsessed with his career and money. He is visited by the ghost of his former boss, Lew, who warns him that he will be haunted by three spirits who will show him his past, present, and future.

The first ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Past, a sarcastic cab driver who takes Frank back to his childhood, where he sees how his father neglected him and gave him meat as a Christmas present. He also sees how he met Claire and how they fell in love, but how he gradually lost her as he became more ambitious and ruthless in his work. The second ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Present, a violent and cheerful fairy who shows Frank how his current actions affect others. He sees how his brother, James, still loves him and invites him to his Christmas party, but Frank never shows up. He also sees how his assistant, Grace, struggles to raise her son, Calvin, who is mute due to trauma. He also sees how Claire has become a compassionate and generous person who helps the homeless and needy. The third ghost is the Ghost of Christmas Future, a terrifying hooded figure who shows Frank the consequences of his future if he does not change. He sees how Eliot, who has gone insane after being fired, tries to kill him. He also sees how Calvin speaks for the first time, saying “God bless us, everyone”, but Frank is not there to hear it. He also sees how Claire has become cold and bitter like him, and how he dies alone and unloved, while his body is cremated and his ashes are dumped into a sewer.

Frank realizes the error of his ways and begs for a second chance. He wakes up on Christmas Day, alive and happy. He reconciles with Claire and proposes to her. He also apologizes to Eliot and gives him his job back. He also gives Grace a raise and a bonus and helps Calvin to speak again. He interrupts the live broadcast of A Christmas Carol and delivers a heartfelt speech to the audience, telling them to celebrate Christmas and love each other. He leads the cast and crew in singing “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”, while the ghosts watch and smile.

Scrooged is a film that combines comedy and drama to deliver a message of hope and redemption. The film uses satire and irony to mock the commercialization and materialism of modern society and to contrast the spirit of Christmas with the greed and selfishness of Frank and his network. The film also pays homage to the original story by Dickens, using references and quotes from the book, as well as featuring actors who have played Scrooge or other characters in previous adaptations. The film also features many celebrity cameos, such as Robert Goulet, John Houseman, Lee Majors, and Buddy Hackett. The film showcases the talent and charisma of Bill Murray, who plays Frank with a mix of sarcasm, cynicism, and vulnerability. The film also has a memorable soundtrack, featuring songs by Annie Lennox, Al Green, and The New York Dolls.
