Chile 1973/2023 | Art, Film & Literature After the Coup
As a part of the series, Chile 1973/2023 | Art, Film & Literature After the Coup, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile, please join CLACS for an evening of short films and video programming entitled Dis/Appearances.
Event Description:
Dis/Appearances is an experimental short film and video program that explores the cinematic treatment of the wounded body. The title alludes both to the crucial figure of the disappeared and to the unearthing of rarely-seen footage from the archives. The selection includes, among others, films and videos by Cristóbal León & Joaquín Cociña, Angelina Vázquez, Claudia Aravena, Bettina Perut & Iván Osnovikoff, and raw footage from the day of the coup by Leonardo de la Barra.
This is the first in a series of six film programs titled “Archives for the Future.” The series seeks to reactivate, reappropriate, and depoliticize the cinematic memory of the Chilean coup. It establishes dialogues between works made throughout the last five decades at different historical moments—from the socialist years of Allende to the dictatorship, post-dictatorship, and the estallido social or “social explosion” in 2019.
Programmed by José Miguel Palacios and Elizabeth Ramírez-Soto.
Reception to follow.
