Educator Summer Film Festival

It’s movie day at the Library! Join The New York Public Library’s Center for Educators and Schools for a three-day film festival—just for teachers. Each day will highlight a different topic in education, spotlight two films, and wrap up with a facilitated conversation following each screening.

Eligible NY State educators will receive 4 hours of CTLE credit for each day of their participation. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Aug 16, Day 1: Literacy & Justice

Understand the connection between literacy and justice by delving into the science of reading. Learn how a love for reading can lead to meaningful change and justice for all.

The Right to Read poses literacy as the greatest civil rights issue of our time and offers science-based reading instruction as a solution to teachers. The film highlights the effectiveness of structured literacy and the importance of getting all key stakeholders involved to achieve true literacy across the United States. (Watch the trailer.)

Butterfly in the Sky tells the story of PBS’s Reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton and others involved in the show’s 26 seasons. Despite coming up against funding hurdles and standardized testing expectations, the show continued to fuel children’s love for reading over many years. (Watch the trailer.)

Aug 17, Day 2: Equity in STEM & Healthcare

How can we make science and technology more ethical and inclusive to all? Learn from trailblazing activists seeking to challenge the status quo.

Picture a Scientist is a documentary that chronicles the inequalities encountered by women in science. Women face significant underrepresentation and bias in STEM occupations and challenges securing leadership positions. This film brings light to the gender inequality faced by women scientists. (Watch the trailer.)

White Coat Rebels documents the structural inequalities of America’s healthcare system and the medical students and doctors who set out to challenge it. This story of activism against Big Pharma reveals the state of healthcare in the United States. (Watch the trailer.)

Aug 18, Day 3: SEL Case Studies—Resilience & Belonging

Learn about the way children deal with traumatic life experiences and how a sense of belonging is a pressing need in today’s isolated world.

Resilience delves into the findings of initially controversial research on the way children deal with traumatic life experiences. Learn from experts who advocate for early intervention and new movements to treat and prevent toxic stress to help the next generation break cycles of adversity and disease. (Watch the trailer.)

Join or Die is a film about the importance of being in a community. Posting clubs as one of democracy’s most important facets, the film makes the case for the importance of joining an organization and how it could solve some of the largest problems with loneliness and isolation in the United States. (Watch the trailer.)
