First Friday Movie Nights: “Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes”
First Friday Movie Nights on 100th Street & Lexington Avenue kick off with one of the earliest New York City premieres of the documentary “Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes.” The film features the groundbreaking sounds of bebop pioneer and virtuoso composer Max Roach, whose far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him.
We’ll kick each First Friday Movie Night off at 7 p.m. with Corine’s Famous Bingo featuring prizes from Restaurant Row businesses, plus film shorts from the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival. The full feature starts at approximately 8 p.m. with the setting of the sun.
Chairs are first-come, first-served — so come early and/or bring your picnic blanket or lawn chair!
First Friday Movie Nights are co-hosted by Uptown Grand Central in partnership with ImageNation and the International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival as part of the Open Streets at East Harlem’s Restaurant Row. Future dates include Friday, August 4, with a screening of “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” highlighting Spider-Man’s Puerto Rican roots, followed by a TBA title for Friday, September 1.
