NFR Series: Vincente Minnelli`s “Gigi”

Based on the novel by Colette, Gaston is the scion of a wealthy Parisian family who finds emotional refuge from the superficial lifestyle of upper-class Parisian 1900s society with the former mistress of his uncle and her outgoing, tomboy granddaughter, Gigi. When Gaston becomes aware that Gigi has matured into a woman, her grandmother and aunt, who have educated Gigi to be a wealthy man’s mistress, request he become her provider.

Gigi [...] is one of the most ornate and colorful tributes to turn-of-the-century Paris ever made in the American Cinema.

— Albert Johnson, Film Quarterly

The National Film Preservation Board serves as an advisory group to the Librarian of Congress to ensure the survival, conservation, and increased public availability of America’s film heritage.
