16mm Film Screening — Mark Rappaport’s “The Scenic Route”
An incestuous triangle formed by two sisters and the man caught between them is the basis for an exploration of romantic myths in the context of a contemporary urban environment. The film juxtaposes the fantasy lives of the characters with the banality of everyday existence. The script is characterized by the self-conscious dialect of the urban pseudo-sophisticate. A range of embarrassingly familiar sentiments are translated to screen.
[The Scenic Route] is a movie of great, grave, tightly controlled visual daring, and you have never seen anything like it before. It never reveals its mysteries... and I never wanted it to.
