16mm Film Screening — ’On the Move: the Central Ballet of China’
This film records the 1986 American premiere of the Central Ballet of China at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It chronicles the troupe’s rehearsals and presents excerpts from its performances. Scenes of the company’s headquarters in Beijing, where members live in a communal setting, are interspersed with a discussion of “China’s youngest art” within the context of the Cultural revolution and its aftermath. During their stay in New York, the Chinese dancers are exposed to American dance styles and movement with Broadway choreographer Graciela Daniele, the Paul Taylor Company, and at the Alvin Ailey School.
While no registration is required, you may register if you wish to receive a reminder a day before/day of the screening, as well as notifications about possible postponements or cancellations.
