Spanish Harlem Dance Festival

Spanish Harlem Creative Movement Fest 2022 is a dance festival that examines the influence of Latinos in America as place of mixed cultures

Devoted to the multicultural nature of New York City, the festival boldly responds to the blurring of cultures from different diasporas, it celebrates and examines the influence of Latinos in America as a place of immigration and mixed cultures; while seeking to showcase dance artists who explore a range of narratives of Latino culture and/or current issues: immigration, forced displacement, identity, and transculturation. Features eight (8) dance artists with hybrid choreographic practices (combining dance movements with other forms/styles, including physical-theater, mime, video, or incorporating performative methods on stage).

Unfolding emotions in motion the festival holds four (4) components:

  1. The Fest: Dance shows on stage, six choreographic works with 20 dancers will take the stage from Sep 15 to Sep 17; with dancistic works by: Arianna Aquino, Stephanie Peña , María Gracia Pérez , Julieta Valero, Chien-Ying Wang, Irene Ruiz-Rivero, Yvanhova Figueroa, and Leonel Linares
  2. Choreographers Talk: post-show conversations between dance creators and audience, conducted by special guests: Rhina Valentin (Sep 15), Alejandra Geithner (Sep 16), and Angelica Guvernez (Sep 17)
  3. Dancing Strokes Exhibition: This exhibition plays with theoretical concepts of movement, light, and rhythm; and how those elements can insinuate motion and create the impression of “action”. It invites the viewer to find the link between a live dance aesthetic and that being reflected in the artwork. Curated by Gustavo Fernandez from Sep 07 to Sep 18. The exhibition will takes lobby and gallery at El Barrio’s Artspace. {Opening night Sep 07}
  4. Dancing Community: A set of dance workshops and wellness activities: Sep 14 at Dance Studio (Lower Level El Barrio’s Artspace). Schedules: 4:30pm jazz for children / 6pm Yoga beginners / 7:30pm Tango beginners. Workshops Coordinator Yvanhova Figueroa.

The festival is headed by Artistic Director & Choreographer Elliott Ortiz. Co-producers: Pilar Cordova and John McGee, who be associate curators too. The Festival will take place at El Barrio’s Artspace in East Harlem New York City, from Sep 07 (exhibition opening), and Dance performances (open Sep 15), and closes on Sep 17.

The Festival is presented by El Barrio’s Artspace & Artspace Projects Inc, with the collaboration of Wonder Moments Inc, and partially funded by LMCC, UMEZ, UMEZ-Mertz Gilmore Seed Fund for Dance
