5th Annual Poetry Fest: Jersey Proud — Poetry Ayscue

Jersey City Writers honors home-grown wordsmiths with our 5th Annual Poetry Fest: Jersey Proud. Join us in welcoming poets from around the Garden State as we celebrate the words that shape us and the stories we can’t forget. We’ve recruited the poetic dream team. Don’t miss a word of it!

It’s poetry, just a little Ayscue, in fact, Mariah Ayscue! Montclair native and Spoken Word wonder performs some of his best work at HCCC’s The Dineen Hull Art Gallery (71 Sip Ave., 6th Floor) and shares his poetry story through and beyond the LGBTQ+ perspective.

Mariah Ayscue (s)he/him/king) is a Black trans, artist, activist, and mental health advocate from Montclair NJ. He expresses his Christian Witch, Disco Ball Dyke, Pansexual Pancake, and Demisexual Dream identities through his poetry. As a directing fellow of Girl Be Heard, he organized socially conscious artists such as guerilla theater performances of Say Her Name at NYC’s City Hall, the African Burial Ground, and Cooper Union. He’s worked with V (formerly Eve) Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) and Tony Porter (A Call to Men founder) to create YouthACT. Mariah wants to reclaim narratives to educate and heal the QTBIPOC community. It is the work he wants to do for the rest of his life.

ASL interpreters will be present at all Jersey Proud events.

If you can’t make it in person, you are invited to join us online.

Jersey City Writers is a 501c3 nonprofit community for writers to interact and develop their skills. JCW’s in-person, online, and hybrid programming includes workshops, writing marathons, readings, retreats, and more.

Supported by public funds from the Jersey City Arts and Culture Trust Fund.
