This exhibition showcases the research and design work of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), School of Architecture & Design, Bachelor of Architecture 5th-year Thesis students, led and taught by NYIT Assistant Professor Evan Shieh. The exhibition investigates the adaptive reuse potential and post-industrial transformation of mono-functional infrastructures distributed across the industrial landscape of New York City, reframing these increasingly obsolete structures not as urban detritus but as fertile ground for new spatial, ecological, and civic futures. Emerging from centuries of fossil-fuel-based industrialization, these monolithic architectures — from reservoirs, power plants, and grain silos, to treatment facilities and armories — were originally designed to serve singular processes of resource extraction, production, storage, waste processing, or defense. As the city transitions away from the fossil-fuel-based industries that produced them, many of these massive structures remain as architectural remnants of an earlier era, carrying both cultural significance and substantial embodied carbon. Through archival research, typological analysis, speculative design, and large-scale sectional models, the exhibition proposes how these mono-functional forms might be reimagined as multi-performative systems capable of supporting new programs, publics, ecologies, and forms of resilience. Positioned between industrial archaeology and architectural speculation, the work asks how the inherited industrial shells of the 20th century might become adaptive frameworks through which more regenerative urban futures are transformed, imagined, and inhabited.
