Recording Studio Basics: Three Week Course

Interested in using our Recording Studio?

Recording Studio Basics is a course series where teens can learn the basics of how to operate our recording studio. At the end of the series, teens are eligible to take the Recording Studio assessment, and when they pass, they will receive a Studio Card and be able to book time in our recording studios independently.

This is a 3-week in-person program, and registration is for all 3 sessions. All sessions take place on the lower level of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library.

In the Equipment Handling Class (Week 1), teens will learn:

  • Microphone types, (Dynamic, Condenser, Ribbon)
  • Cable types (XLR, Instrument, Line, Aux)
  • Various pieces of recording equipment (MIDI Keyboards, Mic Stands, Audio Interfaces, Digital Console)

In the Introduction to Pro Tools class (Week 2), teens will learn:

  • Basic functions of the Pro Tools Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
  • How to set up a recording session inside the program
  • How to record and edit audio within Pro Tools

In the Introduction to Recording class (Week 3), teens will learn:

  • How to set up a microphone in the Recording Studio Live Room
  • How to set up a recording session inside the Pro Tools
  • How to record and edit audio within the Recording Studio Control Room

Please Note: You must attend all three classes and pass an assessment to receive a Recording Studio Access Studio Card. These courses primarily use Apple iMac computers. Teens are encouraged to bring their flash drives or hard drives if they would like to keep their work from class.

Registration for this program opens on December 5th at 4:30 PM. We will also create an in-person waitlist on the first day of the series (January 9th). If a registrant is late or does not show up, teens on the waitlist will be admitted into the program on a first-come, first-served basis.
