Sunday Afternoon Music: Transatlantic Echoes Across Time

Spanning multiple continents and centuries, this Trinity lecture recital looks at vocal music by composers of African heritage. Through dialogue with the audience and performances by soprano soloist Sonya Headlam and pianist Martin Néron, the program highlights music, poetry, and prose from the 18th century to the present.

With pieces by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Peter Ashbourne, and others that explore equity, justice, identity, resilience, hope, and faith, the concert will also include selections from a powerful new work by Trevor Weston. Commissioned by the Raritan Players, Reflections, which Weston originally scored for soprano and square piano, brings the voice of African composer and abolitionist Ignatius Sancho alive with musical excerpts from his letters. Sancho’s reflections on humanity, slavery, and Christianity, paired with Weston’s music, forge a connection between past and present, bringing a modern context to his timeless words. Presented by Trinity Congregational Arts Allegro.

A reception will follow the performance.
