Jazz at One

Trinity Church continues its century-old tradition of offering free midday music: On Mondays this fall, jazz is on the menu. Inspired by Nelson Mandela and the 30th anniversary of South African democracy, this season’s programs celebrate unity, perseverance, and freedom — with the kind of jazz that is, as South African vocalist Vuyo Sotashe puts it, “a voice for our resistance.” Presented in collaboration with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS.

September 30, 1:00 — 2:00 pm EST

Vuyo Sotashe

Emerging from a small town in the east cape of South Africa, Sotashe was a much-loved artist in his home country before establishing himself as a preeminent vocalist here in the States. He has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center and was one of the first male singers to place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition.

October 7, 1:00 — 2:00 pm EST

Lance Bryant & Shout!

Don’t miss legendary vocalist, saxophonist, and composer Lance Bryant when he marshals the force of his 16-piece band, Shout! A longtime collaborator with South African great Abdullah Ibrahim (the pianist known for his anti-apartheid anthem Mannenberg), Bryant presents his healing, empowering brand of jazz infused with spirituality and the blues.

October 14, 1:00 — 2:00 pm EST

Helen Sung Quartet

Classically trained as a pianist and composer, Sung is a Guggenheim Fellow and winner of the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. A graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, she’s worked with such luminaries as the late Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter, and Grammy winners Terri Lyne Carrington and Cécile McLorin Salvant.

October 21, 1:00 — 2:00 pm EST

Jazz at One: Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience

Join us to celebrate the late jazz master’s birthday with bassist and producer John Lee’s energetic ensemble. The hour promises to be a rousing tribute to one of jazz’s great ambassadors (trumpeter/composer/bandleader/bebop king) and symbols of freedom.

October 28, 1:00 — 2:00 pm EST

“Sounds of South Africa”

Don’t miss the season’s Jazz at One finale, featuring a vibrant blend of traditional African music, contemporary hits, infectious energy — and a very special surprise guest.
