Renewal: The Sound of a New World Concert

Trinity’s new music orchestra, NOVUS NY, and GRAMMY-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion present eco-minded works by Viet Cuong, Jessica Meyer, and others on Sunday, December 3, at 4 pm, in Trinity Church.

Re(new)al by composer Viet Cuong is a percussion quartet concerto inspired by the power of renewable energy that explores themes of cooperation and synergy — working together toward a better future.

Composer and violist Jessica Meyer’s A Passage Between Earth and Sky evokes the sounds of a tree’s lifecycle, including its destruction by fearful human action.

A Forest Unfolding is a collaborative eco-cantata that speaks to the need for human reintegration into the deeply collaborative world by weaving together works by multiple composers and writers, including novelist Richard Powers, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Overstory, is a work of climate activism and resistance.

Please join us for a special post-concert reception. More details coming soon.

This performance is presented as part of Trinity’s Renewal concert series, which considers the issues of prison reform, the climate crisis, and immigration through music.

NOVUS NY, Trinity’s new music orchestra, is a key player on the contemporary music scene. These “expert and versatile musicians” (The New Yorker) perform new music from all corners of the repertoire, meeting “every challenge with an impressive combination of discipline and imagination” (New York Classical Review).

GRAMMY-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion brings out the best in composers through their unwavering dedication to artistry in contemporary chamber music. Described as “exhilarating” (The New York Times) and “utterly mesmerizing” (The Guardian), Sandbox Percussion captivates audiences with performances that are both visually and aurally stunning, solidifying them as leaders in the fields of contemporary music and percussion.
