Sonido Classico was founded by guitarist Carlos Castillo in 1998 as a large Latin orchestra. The current sextet preserves the golden era of Latin music and the American songbook. Mr. Castillo has performed with the La Playa Sextet, Machito and the Afro Cubans, the Tito Rodriguez Orchestra, the Tito Puente Orchestra, and the Joe Cuba Sextet, and among his appearances on classic recordings are Ray Barretto’s “King Creole” (1966) and Machito and Dizzy Gillespie’s “Afro Cuban Moods” (1975).

Presented by the Jazz Foundation of America, supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by the Howard Gilman Foundation.
