About the Duo

The Lippel/Flórez duo is a meeting ground for two versatile musicians showcasing their interest in classical/contemporary writing and improvisation in a variety of settings. Their approach bridges the worlds of New Music, jazz, and free improv, resulting in a fiery blend of eclectic virtuosity. Daniel Lippel has been called an “exciting soloist” (New York Times) and “precise and sensitive” (Boston Globe), and has established himself as a vital force in the New Music scene in NYC and abroad. He regularly premieres pieces written by some of today’s most important composers, both as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles, including the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). He is also co-founder/director of the label New Focus Recordings and appears as a guest in numerous performances and recordings of solo and ensemble music. All through his impressive output, Daniel exhibits a distinctly modern musical voice and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of the guitar and its new repertoire. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Alejandro Flórez works as an instrumentalist, composer, and educator in NYC. He has appeared extensively as a sideman in productions of Latin American and World music, touring the US, Canada, and Colombia. As a bandleader, Alejandro has produced several recordings with his quartet and with the Gallo/Flórez duo. He has received recognition as a composer from the John Lennon Songwriting Competition and the Queens Council of the Arts. Semana magazine, with one of the largest circulations in his home country, named Meleyólamente, the debut album by the Gallo/Flórez duo, as one of the top 10 of 2008. His current work focuses on blurring the boundaries between improvisation and composition, working alongside many well-known members of NYC’s jazz and free improv scenes.
